The politics of Makueni are in the country’s limelight as the people of Makueni prepare to elect their senator after the death of Mutula Kilonzo who was just less than a month old in the seat.  The politics seem to be getting hotter particularly after the Late Mutula’s Wife Nduku Kilonzo and the daughter Kethi Kilonzo both declared interest in the seat.

This development has triggered so much reaction from all quarters and has been viewed by analyst as a family contest.  Kethi Kilonzo, who rose to fame during the recent presidential petition case against Uhuru Kenyatta seem to be enjoying massive support from the residents of Makueni county  who received the news of her decision to contest the seat with a lot of excitement  and warmly welcomed it.  However in a rejoinder, through her twitter account, on Tuesday 11th, the young lawyer announced through that she has dropped out of the Makueni Senate race.

She stated that she could not contest against her mother, Nduku Kilonzo. “A child does not compete with the mother. It is a curse. I will not support Jubilee. To stand with my father’s enemies is a worse curse,” she said on Twitter.

”Today is a dark day. May the people of Makueni and all who have stood with me one day find it in their hearts to forgive me” she tweeted.

It is speculated that Mutula’s widow Nduku will be vying for the Senatorial seat under the Jubilee Alliance   under its constituent party Narc, speculations which Narc leader Mr. Kiema Kilonzo refuted, Kiema said  they had  already settled on former Kibwezi MP Philip Kaloki. The deadline for parties to identify candidates was last Wednesday and according to Mr. Kiema Kilonzo Mrs Kilonzo’s name was not among the ones he presented to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission last week.

Her entry in the race would have pit her against her step-daughter Kethi Kilonzo, who was to take the seat on a Cord alliance ticket until this recent developmnets

The timing of Mrs Kilonzo’s announcement has remained to be talk of the town, especially among Kenyans on social media. Critics say she was being groomed by the ruling coalition due to the fact that she chose to make her stand known at a function in which President Kenyatta was the chief guest.

Meanwhile, Kenyans will be waiting to see how the politics of Makueni keep unfolding and who indeed will be the next Senator for Makueni.
